May 2006: F. Noblesse (DTMB), R. Espinosa (GMU),
Chi Yang, and
Rainald Löhner
received the best paper award at the ISOPE (International
Society for Offshore and Polar Engineers) Conference in
San Francisco, CA, for their paper entitled `Dispersion Curves for for
Diffraction-Radiation by a Ship Advancing Through Regular Waves
in Finite Water Depth'. The paper was originally presented at the 15th
annual ISOPE Conference (ISOPE 2005), held in Seoul, June 19-24, 2005.
The annual ISOPE conference is the largest conference in the field
of offshore and polar engineering. The 15th annual Conference counted
participants from 47 nations, sitting in on 93 sessions and 3
plenary sessions. The paper was selected best paper among the 471
peer-reviewed papers presented.
January 2006: Prof. Rainald Löhner was recognized as a
Distinguished Professor 'for his substantive and innovative contributions
to the field of computational fluid dynamics'. The ceremony took place
at GMU on January 24, and was attended by GMU's president and provost,
the deans of several of GMU's schools, many scientitics active in CFD,
colleagues, friends and family. Pictures from the event may be seen

December 2005: Prof. Rainald Löhner was named Honorary
Professor of the University of Wales at Swansea. This recognition
should serve as a basis for future collaboration of the CFD
group at GMU with Swansea's CFD/CEM/CSD groups.
March 2005: Prof. Chi Yang
was awarded a Cheung Kong (Chang Jiang) Scholars Program
Guest Chair Professor in the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean
Engineering from the Chinese Ministry of Education.
Her host university is Shanghai Jiao Tong University, one
of the top five universities in China and the foremost university in the
field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. This award will
enable her and the CFD group at GMU to collaborate with Shanghai Jiao
Tong University (SJTU).
Cheung Kong Scholars Program is a special program jointly established
and sponsored by the Ministry of Education of China and Hong Kong
entrepreneur Mr. Li Ka-Shing and his Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings
Limited. The Cheung Kong Scholars Program Endowed Professorship award is
considered to be one of the most prestigious academic awards in China.
Its Guest Chair Professor Award has been given to young and middle-aged
elite academics abroad (mainly Chinese origin) yearly since 1999 to
participate in research activities at high-ranked universities in China.
Among 79 Guest Chair Professor awardees for this year, two of them were
the Noble Prize winners. Prof. Yang was the only one who received the
award in the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering for the
past three years. Prof. Yang was invited by the Ministry of Education of
China to attend the award ceremony held at the Great Hall of the People
in Beijing on March 28, 2005 as one of the representatives of the Guest
Chair Professor Award recipients of the Cheung Kong Scholars Program.
March 2005: Prof. Rainald Löhner was named Advisory
Professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, one
of the top five universities in China and the foremost university in the
field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. This award will
enable him and the CFD group at GMU to collaborate with Shanghai Jiao
Tong University (SJTU).
August 2004: Prof. Juan R. Cebral's paper entitled
`Characterization Of Cerebral Aneurysms For Assessing The Risk Of
Rupture Using Patient-Specific Computational Hemodynamics Models'
(by JR Cebral, MA Castro, JE Burgess, R Pergolizzi and CM Putman)
was winner of the Norma E. Leeds Award for best scientific paper at
Meeting of the Eastern Neuroradiology Society, Boston, MA.
This award includes funds and an invitation to present the paper at
the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR) Annual Meeting, May 2005.
February 2004: Prof. Juan R. Cebral's poster/paper entitled
`Multimodality Image-Based Models Of Carotid Artery Hemodynamics'
(by JR Cebral, CM Putman, R Pergolizzi, JE Burgess and PJ Yim)
was awarded the Cum Laude Poster Award in the Physiology and Function
session of the SPIE Medical Imaging Conference, San Diego, CA.
November 1999: Prof. Rainald Löhner received the Computational
Mechanics Achievements Award from the Computational Mechanics Division of
the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers `for his distinguished
achievements in the field of computational mechanics'. The award ceremony
took place during the annual meeting of the Computational Mechanics Division
of JSME in Matsuyama, on the island of Shikoku.
